ASP.NET seems a little slow. . .

Just finished doing some updates to my site, WargoFamily.com, and I'm a little annoyed at the speed of the site.  First, I found my host, Aplus.net, was injecting some code into the pages.  I believe this was for logging purposes, but it seemed to be bogging it down as it might have been interfering with the script I already in place for counting and logging.  A chat session and some time wasted explaining it wasn't my code (I was told to re-publish the site WITHOUT the code), and they finally understood it wasn't in my code but theirs.

Secondly, I'm not sure if the host is slow or if it is just my pages.  I built the site using .NET and VB script, and my first page load can take an extended period of time.  Most of the time it is less than 10 seconds, but still quite a bit of time for a user to wait.  Locally, my pages are much quicker, but that's on my computer and no lag in the Internet.  Ever since Aplus was bought out I feel as if I'm not getting the service I once did.

Anyway, this got me to thinking about changing.  If I'm going to change then I might as well entertain the idea of converting to PHP, and then I can move off of the Windows hosting platform.  Probably more to come. . . .

The Trusted Nerd!

Ok, it has been quite some time since I've been on my blog.  I had almost forgot about it, and a friend of ours posted on Facebook about her blog post on cloth diapers:  http://jasonadoption.blogspot.com/2013/09/charlie-banana-cloth-diaper-review.html

I decided I might as well do an update while I was here.  My last post talked about a new job which has since come and gone, and the job after that has come and gone.  Both companies decided to close the local plant and move.  The most interesting thing is this is actually an answer to my prayer. 

I asked God to make my path very clear.  Am I supposed to work my business, or will a job be available to me?  Well, the very next day I walked into Pines Technology and the owner called me into the conference room.  It was all very quick and sudden, but I had my answer.  I no longer have a job and need income.  I set out to promote my business.

It's been a few months since I was let go, and I have not had to claim unemployment.  I've made enough to keep my head above water, and also provide me with enough time to do some things I would not have been able to.  My friend asked if I could help him move.  Three days later we had the truck packed and he was thankful I was able to help.  I was very glad I could help.  With a normal 9 - 5 job I wouldn't have been able to, and God has been providing for me.  Jobs come in when I don't think anything is working.

New Job Going Great!

I'm in a new job and it's going great! I didn't realize how much I did not like Arrow (my previous employer). I think my brain was going mushy. Anyway, I now have my first "computer" job and lovin' it. Being an IT manager wasn't top on my list of careers, but it's not bad. I have a lot of fixing this or that, but I do get to dabble in some scripting and database stuff. I'm hoping after I get some experience and finish my degree, everything will payoff. I only have about 5 more classes to go, and then I'm taking a break. I think maybe I'll finally take a vacation with my wife, Darrylin, who has been very patient these past 4 years as I trudge through all of this.



BTW, here is a pic of my wife and her little dog Daisy. She's so ugly that she's cute. (The dog, not my wife!)

Wooohooo! New JOB

Finally, all of the school is going to pay off. I happened to put my resume out on some job sites, and lo and behold someone contacted me! After several interviews they called and offered me a position as their IT manager. The title is a little deceiving. I'm not actually managing people, but rather the computer networks and physical machines and maybe a little programming. There is more to the job, and it should grow into something great. It will be my first "computer" job. I am finally getting away from electronics as the main focus of my career.

Anyway, I'll start in two weeks. I did tell my boss and gave notice so the wheels are turning for my departure. It's scary and exciting all at the same time.

Put your makeup on at home!

I have had a couple instances this week of women applying makeup WHILE driving. You can see the rear view mirror cocked to one side, the woman leaning over to see her face, and the car swerving all over the road. I had the (mis)pleasure of following one such woman into work today. Rrrrrr, just get off of the road! A few days earlier I was almost hit broadside when that woman didn't realize she was changing lanes (because she was so involved with her application of makeup).

OK, venting complete. If you read this, it isn't an attack on women. I've also seen many men doing other crazy things, ummm, like SHAVING! Please, just pay attention and watch the road. I would actually like to live a few more years.

As a side note, have fun with your friends and look for women farding (no, that's not a misspelling) on the road. (Farding is the act of applying makeup!) It's always funny to say, "Look at that woman farding!" Of course, pronunciation is key and you'll get a giggle or two. Happy hunting.

I know, another late post!

Another class is done and I needed a break. I decided that 6 weeks off was a good thing, and after my last C++ class it is well deserved. The class is named "Data Structure and Algorithms" and wasn't expecting such a heavy load of C++. Whew, it's been quite some time since I've had any C++ and it took me part of the class just relearning some of my C++. Anyway, it's over now and I'm glad for my little vacation. I know I keep saying this, but I really should keep this thing up to date.

I did have some stuff to post about ASP.NET and web applications not working correctly with the Microsoft starter kits and databases, but most of that is on the back burner somewhere. (Yea, I'm such a nerd!) I just completed another quick site for our Amherst Girls Soccer team (my daughter's high school team) and had similar problems with the database calls. A quick note: Make sure the connection strings point to the real database and not some locally generated database on your computer, otherwise your guests can't see the info. (I speak from experience)
